A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE: TABLETOP MINIATURES GAME

An Expanding Player Base

Plan to purchase additional factions

The first six months after ASOIAF: TMG’s release brought two new factions into the mix, the Night’s Watch Faction, and the Free Folk. While ASOIAFcc.com and On the Table Gaming are perhaps more well known with the longtime players, it is important to note that just over half of the respondents to our poll did not purchase the Kickstarter. While our self-reporting shows the former garnered more interest in the player base, evidence shows that the majority of players. With recent efforts to penetrate the war-gaming community at Adepticon 2019 through distribution of free Stark vs. Lannister Starter Sets, the game is set to continue to make strong progress in the second half of its first year of release.

The Community's View: Balance

With their Lannister Supremacy keyword making them a forgiving entry into the game, as well as a solid choice of options for building diverse lists capable of handling the ever-increasing number of threats new factions bring to the table,  House Lannister continues to dominate the community as a perceived top faction. As we collect additional data on the developing tournament scene, this may be borne out in a statistically significant manner, but as of right now, self-reported tournament reports do not seem to support this dominant perception.

View as most powerful faction

With a focus on maneuverability, House Stark‘s abilities positioned themselves as strong tournament contenders in events, competitively holding their own in our self-reported tournament results. However, despite being the second most popular house to be collected as a primary faction, they were significantly less likely to be reported as being the most powerful faction in comparison to the other factions.

View as most powerful faction

The first complete starter set made available after the launch of the game, the Night’s Watch were played as a primary faction at significantly lower levels despite being perceived as the second most powerful faction. At On the Table Gaming, we expect the Night’s Watch to increase in power as a faction as new units are released. They have performed well in self-reported tournament results, despite having a more limited number of troop offerings than the more established Lannister and Stark factions.

Primarily Play as Free Folk

View as most powerful faction

As the newest entry into ASOIAF: TMG, it is no surprise that the Free Folk are one of the least played factions at this time. Coupled with their horde play-style, the cost of this faction comparatively can be a discouragement to pick up as a secondary faction. Despite being the winning faction at Adepticon 2019, the Free Folk are tied for being perceived as the weakest faction by the community.

Primarily Play as Neutrals

View as most powerful faction

Despite new players trepidation over facing the Bolton Flayed Men, the Neutral Faction, currently comprised of entirely House Bolton forces, is the least likely faction to be a player’s primarily played force. Lacking a true starter set and key units such as the House Bolton Blackguard, the Bolton forces are currently more likely to be played as mercenaries within the other factions. As new units are released, this faction will gain increased viability.

A SNAPSHOT IN TIME

While our poll was far from exhaustive, we are excited to collect this snapshot of the communities perspective of A Song of Ice and Fire the miniatures game. As we move towards integrating our tournament tracking software at ASOIAFcc.com we look forward to comparing data from tournaments with the communities perspective and look forward to the further development of the ASOIAF community.
